Internal Transfer and the Dual-Degree Process
Information for Internal Transfer or Dual-Degree Applicants to Wharton
Penn students enrolled as undergraduates in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the College of Arts and Sciences or the School of Nursing may apply for Internal Transfer to or Dual Degree with the Wharton School after they have completed at least two semesters (but no more than four semesters) at Penn. Students who are or were enrolled in the College of Liberal and Professional Studies (formerly College of General Studies) as a degree candidate are not eligible to apply. For additional information contact an advisor by calling 215-898-7608 or email advising@wharton.upenn.edu.

When can I apply for internal transfer or dual degree?
Freshmen may apply after completing a full academic year (after the end of the second semester).
- Freshmen must complete at least eight course units (cu’s) within the academic year (fall and spring semesters only).
- No more than one course can be taken pass/fail during the academic year.
- Classes taken during summer terms do NOT count towards the eight-cu requirement.
- Classes taken during summer terms DO count towards the prerequisite requirements (MATH 104, ECON 001, ECON 002).
Sophomores have two opportunities to apply: after the third semester and at the end of sophomore year.
- Sophomores must complete at least four cu’s per semester.
- No more than one course can be taken pass/fail during the academic year.
External transfer students may apply for the dual degree program after completing two resident semesters at Penn.
- External transfer students can apply for the dual degree program ONLY. They cannot apply for internal transfer.
- External transfer students who are accepted into the dual degree program MUST complete the degree program in their home school and cannot complete their Wharton degree only.
- External transfer students accepted into the junior class at Penn (i.e., students who have already completed two years of college) are NOT eligible to apply for a dual degree with Wharton.
What classes are required to apply?
After the second semester, the following must be completed:
- Math 104
- Economics 001 and 002
After the third semester, in addition to the previously stated courses, the following must be completed:
- Accounting 101
- Statistics 101 / ESE 301 / STAT 430. Note: If you have STAT 111 from AP/IB credit, you may enroll in the second semester of Statistics. STAT 111 fulfills the STAT 101 requirement after successful completion of second semester Statistics.
- BPUB 250 or ECON 101 (Please check with your home school advisor to ensure that you are meeting the degree requirements for your home school)
After the fourth semester, in addition to the previously stated courses, the following must be completed:
- Accounting 102
- Statistics 102 / ESE 302 / STAT 431
Can I take classes at Penn during the summer to fulfill the requirements?
Students applying for the entry in the fall semester may take required courses in the summer term if their application is submitted by the end of the spring term. Students must indicate this on their applications.
If students take required courses at Penn in the summer, only grades for those courses required for the internal transfer/dual degree process will be factored into the GPA calculation.
Can I take classes at another university during the summer to fulfill the requirements?
Students CANNOT take any business courses at another university to fulfill the requirements.
Transfer credit for ECON or MATH from a summer session at another university is subject to approval by the respective Penn department. Upon satisfactory review, the home school will post the credit. Admissions decisions are not made until the credit is posted.
Students should keep in mind that the transfer credit approval process can delay the review of an application. Therefore we strongly recommend that you take all necessary courses at Penn. If credits are not posted by the first day of classes at the start of the semester, the application will not be considered for that semester.
What if I have waivers, AP, IB, or transfer credit to fulfill the requirements?
If you have received a waiver, AP, IB, or transfer credit for required courses, you do NOT need to retake those courses.
Course waivers, transfer credit, and AP/IB credit must appear on the student’s transcript before the application is submitted. Applications that do not have updated waiver, transfer credit, or AP/IB documentation are not considered. Advisors in students’ home schools should be consulted about this. Wharton advisors cannot post credits or waivers to records of non-Wharton students.
What if I have an Incomplete, NR, or GR on my transcript?
All open grading issues (Incompletes, NRs, GRs, grade changes, etc.) must be resolved within two weeks after the last day of exams in the semester that you are applying. Applications that contain Incompletes, NRs, GRs, etc. will not be considered.
Where and when do I pick up and submit my application?
Applications are available at all home school advising offices (not online) and can be picked up at any time. All applications must be submitted to your home school (COL, NUR, SEAS) by the last day of classes in the semester. The home school will review and forward the applications that meet all requirements.
If you are taking summer school courses to fulfill the necessary requirements, you must make note of that on your application. You must still submit the application to your home school by the last day of classes.
Do I need to see an advisor before I can apply?
All applicants must see an advisor in their home school and an advisor in the Wharton Undergraduate Division. You can either schedule an appointment with a Wharton advisor by calling 215-898-7608 or you can come to suite G95 in Huntsman Hall during walk-in advising hours.
How do I know what classes to register for next semester if I don’t know whether I have been accepted yet?
This is a matter that you should discuss one-on-one with an advisor in your home school as well as an advisor in Wharton.
What are the GPA requirements?
Candidates must have a minimum 3.40 cumulative GPA (not rounded up) to be eligible to apply. Applicants with cumulative GPAs below a 3.40 are not considered.
Because the number of seats and the applicant pool changes each semester, there is no standard qualifying GPA for admission. While we require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.40 to apply, this does NOT guarantee acceptance.
All required courses must be successfully completed with a minimum grade of “C” (2.0) or better. Students who receive below a “C” in required courses are ineligible to apply. Students cannot retake required courses.
How many seats are available for internal transfer and dual degree?
The number of seats available varies each semester depending on our current student enrollment.
How are applications evaluated?
Applying for internal transfer or dual degree is a competitive process. Decisions are based strictly on the applicant’s cumulative GPA, the completion of prerequisites, and availability of seats. We accept as many students as we have seats available. Students are accepted in descending GPA order. No additional factors are considered.

Is it easier to get accepted as an internal transfer or as a dual degree applicant?
Internal transfer and dual degree applications are considered together in one pool. Students are accepted in descending GPA order until all seats are filled, regardless of whether they applied as an internal transfer or a dual degree applicant.
Is it easier to get in as a sophomore or a junior?
Because the number of seats and the applicant pool changes each semester, we cannot predict this. We recommend that you apply as soon as you recognize your interest in doing so.
When can I expect to find out if I’ve been accepted?
Students who apply at the end of the spring semester (rising sophomores or juniors) and have completed the prerequisites during the academic year can expect to hear a decision in mid-June.
Students who apply at the end of the spring semester (rising sophomores or juniors) but need to take summer courses to complete prerequisites will receive a decision after their grades are posted—a couple of weeks after the end of the first or second summer session.
Students who apply in the middle of their sophomore year can expect to hear a decision in early January after their grades have been posted.
If I am admitted, what requirements will I have to take to catch up?
All accepted students must enroll in MGMT 100 in the spring semester immediately following their acceptance.
Admitted rising sophomores must complete BPUB 250 or ECON 101 by the end of their sophomore year
Students who violate the academic integrity policy at Penn are not eligible for Internal Transfer or Dual Degree.
Because of the volume of applications received, there are no exceptions to any of the above policies.
