External Exam Credits and Waivers

Pre-College Coursework

College-level coursework undertaken while enrolled at the secondary level or in the summer prior to matriculation at the University is considered a part of a student’s preparation for a Penn education and is used by the student’s academic advisor to guide placement into appropriate courses at Penn. Credit on the Penn transcript is not granted for this coursework. The one exception is students who enroll in courses at Penn during the summer prior to their matriculation into an undergraduate degree program at the University. Such coursework will be recorded along with credit earned on their undergraduate transcript, which would otherwise start with the fall semester.

External Exam Credits and Waivers

The University of Pennsylvania may award course credit or waivers to students who have taken Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or other internationally-recognized examinations. Scores warranting University credit or waivers vary by department. Matriculating students seeking credit or waivers for:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) exams must have official score reports sent directly to the Office of the University Registrar by the Educational Testing Service.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) exams must have official score reports sent directly to the Office of Admissions by the International Baccalaureate Organization.
  • A-Level exams must bring their original A-Level certificates to the Office of Admissions in order to have their scores evaluated for credit.
  • SAT II exams must have official score reports sent directly to the University of Pennsylvania by the College Board.

The chart below provides guidance on which external exam credits or waivers can be applied to Wharton requirements. Any credits received for exams not listed below may count as unrestricted electives. A full list of external exam credits can be found on the Penn Admissions website.

Note that Penn’s foreign language, mathematics, and natural science departments also offer exams for placement into higher-level courses. The academic department offering the exam determines whether a credit or waiver is given.
